A debut, a concert given away, and Beethoven’s year

Kaylie is a 16-year-old pianist, born and raised in Hong Kong. She began piano at four. At eight she joined the Junior Music Programme at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where she continues to study with Rachel Cheung. The Hong Kong Sinfonietta, which engaged her this summer, describes an artistic maturity and expressive sensitivity ahead of her years.

The prize list starts early. At eight she won the Championship and the Hamamatsu City Mayor’s Award at the 23rd PIARA Piano Competition in Japan. She later took First Prize at the 85th Steinway & Sons International Youth Piano Competition China Final (Amateur Group B), and placed among the top prize-winners in the Hong Kong and Macau region of the 87th and 89th editions (Professional Group). In 2023 she received the Gold Award, Young Musician Award and Audience Award at the International Ponte Music Festival Concerto Competition. At the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival she has taken the Piano Solo Junior Exhibitioner Award, piano concerto honours in the under-13 and under-19 groups, and the Tom Lee Music Piano Solo Scholarship. She is also a Grantham Music Award recipient of the Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Association.

In 2025 she won the Junior Category of the Sinfonietta’s Auditions On Stage – Piano.

The engagement followed on 10 and 11 July 2026 at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, in Know Your Piano Concertos, part of the International Arts Carnival. Under Music Director Emeritus Yip Wing-sie, she and fellow winner Lin Jia-hong Ericsson made their debuts, playing Mozart and Grieg respectively, on a programme that also included Colleen Lee in Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

This August 2026 she collaborated with a local youth orchestra on a charity concert dedicated to single-parent families. Netx June in 2027 she will return to City Hall for the Beethoven 32 Series, initiated by local pianist KJ Wong (KaJeng Wong) and Music Lab. The cycle pays tribute to all 32 piano sonatas in Beethoven Year, the bicentenary of his death, shared by pianists born before and after 2000. Kaylie is one of the post-2000 pianists, playing one of the early sonatas.
